I am extremely happy to be able to report this !  Smiley

Last week, in Japan I picked up a Sapphire Vapor X 1 Gb HD 5870 ( overclocked version ) for ¥6,000 !
Link here : http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/product_index.aspx?pid=293&lid=1

The Sapuakari.rom works perfectly with EFI boot screen in OS X 10.6.8 & OS X 10.9.5 using the BOTTOM DVI port with a DVI to VGA adapter in my 2007  2,1 Dual Quad 3Ghz Mac Pro.

Also shows up correctly in Sys Profiler.

The Sapuakari rom is here  http://forum.netkas.org/index.php?topic=371.0
Scroll down to the first Sapphire HD 5870 1 GB entry. it is under the 4,1 Mac Pro listing.

This card requires 2 x 6 pin power cables. As I need one more for a Firewire card I made up a molex cable to run from the rear of the MP drive bay to the main case area.

Incidentally, I used WinFlash in Windows 7 without using bootcamp.
Bootcamp is a PITA. To get around Bootcamp I removed all hard drives except one formatted using Tuxera NTFS and booted from a Win 7 install disk & installed the 32 bit version and then the flash tools.
Now flashing in my MP is much less painless.

After flashing this card runs silently at idle and as of yet I have not heard any noticeable increase in fan noise under load ( eg: running X-Plane 10 in hi res settings ).

This is a very welcome upgrade from my ( nice ) EFI bootscreen capable MSI R 5770 1 gb.

I have not yet tested DVI-HDMI and assume that there will be no boot screen.
EDIT : DVI - HDMI works  - no boot screen.

Nor have I tested HDMI - HDMI or DVI-DP. I'll post when I get some spare time.

I hope this post is useful to fellow Nekas apostles.

A heartfelt " Thank You " to whomever made the Sapuakai.rom  . . . .  Jeanlain ? Correct me if I am mistaken.

Fl0r!an has done some truly pioneering work on getting full functionality with AMD cards.

The above link is a great "flashing 101 for newbies.

EDIT : I am pleased to announce that both the UPPER & LOWER DVI ports are working but only the LOWER will show Apple BOOT screens.
I had two monitors running of the card tonight.

I'm bumping this because the VaporX Sapphire HD 5870 is an excellent card for 1.1 & 2.1 Mac Pros.

EFI Apple boot screens do work with the Sapuakari.rom

ROM LINK : http://forum.netkas.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=334.0;attach=346

1.  Both DVI ports work.

2.  The LOWER DVI port yields boot screens if a DVI to VGA cable /VGA adaptor is used.

3   DVI - HDMI works but no boot screen.

4. I don't have a Display port to HDMI cable so no test yet.

Tonight I had two monitors running off both DVI ports.

Compared to my old X1900XT and for the ¥6,000 I paid for the VaporX here in Japan.  It's a steal.

==========================================

You don't need Bootcamp!

If you have a spare hard drive and a Win 7 instal DVD.

1.     Format the spare HD as FAT in Disk Utility.

2.     Insert the Win 7 install DVD

3.     Shut down the MP and remove all hard drives except your Win 7 target hard drive.

4.     Restart the MP holding donw the C key . .wait a bit and Win 7 install will start.

5.     I installed 32 bit Win 7 ( easier for a MP 2,1 )

6.     During the initial Win 7 install process you'll probably have to once again .. re-format the target drive.

Win 7 takes quite a while to install.
After installation I recommend seting up a Win 7 Administrator account and log into that for the actual flashing ( Google " create Win 7 Administrato account.

===============================

For those who would like boot screens in both DVI ports and perhaps the Display port as well and are not afraid to use Terminal commands. . .

. . .  go to Fl0r!an's page here : http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,10827.0.html

This member is doing truly groundbreaking work on our behalf . .and succeeding. Sadly I literally don't have the time to have my 2,1 MP down for any extended period at the moment due to work pressures.

Anyway, have fun.
