Sierra. My problems were always related to not being in the path where the command is.

Hi guys,

after years without any problem, my Sapphire HD 7950 (flashed according to this thread) stopped working after updating to Mojave 10.14.6 today. I have a 5,1 (2010) Mac Pro/cMP. Mojave just boots to black after 3/4 of the loading bar. Safe-mode works fine, boot menu works too.

I’ve updated starting from 10.12.6, which I ran until today. Then I installed 10.13.(6) as instructed by the installer. 10.13 worked fine so I went on installing Mojave.

According to the fan/disc sound the boot process finishes fine. It just goes black.

Can someone point me into the right direction please? Should I check updating the firmware? What did change from High Sierra to Mojave that could lead to this behavior. Please find additional system info attached.

– Alex

(I’ve tried: Resetting PRAM/SMC, booting to safe-mode: Works, logging in blind: No luck, Using a different display than my 30” Cinema: No luck, booting to Windows 10: Works fine.)

My Sapphire 7970 flashed with a 7950 I can't even get to High Sierra. Get boot screen progress bar goes about halfway then screen goes black. But the same board works with Sierra. I think I need to reflash it but maybe with a different EFI BIOS file.

And I still can't get that script ./makerom.sh to run. get something like bad command /bin/bash no such file or directory and that is the 1st line of the script! I copied all files to a blank hard drive ran from there and still errors. I do think your right HAL I think it has to do with the path that the files are in. Maybe explain how you got it to work.

@Alex I see no line entry for Metal under Graphics/Displays. So your board is not showing as Metal compatible. macOS High Sierra was the last version that ran on non Metal graphics boards. Which Mojave needs. So maybe re-flash the board or get a pre-flashed board. Or stick with high sierra.

Familiarize yourself with unix commands and 'cd' to the patch where your script is at.

I know about CD and LS also CHMOD. but for some reason it just refuses to work. Did you download the script to your MAC? I download to my PC which might be why it doesn't work. Download to a PC you loose the resource fork if there is any. Kind of like attributes.

I downloaded it to my Mac. You have to execute the script on a Mac anyway.

Which Sapphire 7970 do you have ?

Dual-X

or . .

VaporX

I don't understand why you used a 7950 rom on a 7970.

I EFI flashed my Dual-X and downvolted it plus added new fan set ( common problem with these cards ).
Everything working 100%

I wanted to report partial success flashing my Sapphire HD 7950. The model I have is the "Dual-X fans w/ Boost", or SKU 11196-16-20G. This is one of the models with a non-reference port layout, with 2xDVI, 1xDP (*not* mini-DP) and 1xHDMI.

I tried several times to 'roll my own' ROM, and each time met with failure. Initially it was because I used device ID 697a, but even after correcting for that I couldn't get a boot screen. Then I found that my ROM had a checksum of 0x0, which was causing the python script to fail. So I had to change this line in fixrom.py:
Code:
self.data[-1] = chr(0x100 - sum)

to this:
Code:
self.data[-1] = chr((0x100 - sum)%0x100)
Even after making these changes, the card would not display boot screens and would always show as '7xxx' in 'About this Mac.'

Finally, I combed through the thread looking for someone who had had success with my model. I found Post #441 by JoepVK where he reported that it worked, but had issues with DisplayPort. I flashed his modded ROM and had a similar outcome.

I have similar issues with HDMI, but DVI works fine for me. That's good enough for me to move on with my life. Thanks @JoepVK...
