Hey all!

I came across this forum, while I was looking for VGA BIOS mods. I'm looking out for some help to add 1920x1080 VESA mode to my reference card, Sapphire HD5870 1GB (http://situsvga.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Sapphire-Game-Edition-HD5870-1GB-GDDR5.jpg). A while back I tried to do it on my own, when I saw the following topic on insanelymac: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=211294... I ended up blindflashing my HD5870.
Because of my Display, which is connected over Displayport, I need a recent VGA BIOS, which isn't available here "yet" (VER012.020.000.001.036486; 113-C00140-00Z). Older versions have flickering issues with my screen.
I just need the VESA mode (so, no EFI part), since I'm running a Hackintosh setup.

I'd be really happy about some help!

Thanks,

It's me again: I tried to use the AnalyseVBIOS tool, but it just doesn't give me any output of the VESA tables. I renamed "Cypress.bin" to "boot.rom" ("hide extensions" unticked).

$ ./AnalyseVBIOS boot.rom
Attempting to open boot.rom
Length:131072

Did someone get the tool working? I'm using SL 10.6.5.

Hello again!

I did a bit more research on this topic and came to the following conclusion: the HD5xxx's VESA tables can't be modified in the same way as the HD3xxx / HD4xxx cards. Noone else besides JJJohan on insanelymac and Pakun here (http://forum.netkas.org/index.php?topic=407.0) confirmed a working 1920x1080 VESA mode. So, I contacted both via E-Mail and Pakun replied the following:

Actually, I discovered that with that ROM, it isn't 1080p at bootup. It is actually a smaller resolution but in the WIDESCREEN RATIO. I didn't realize that until I posted it. I tried flashing a Sapphire 5770 with that ROM and it didn't output the proper resolution like the XFX did. I am starting to think it is hardware dependent... I am not too sure about the 5770 anymore, cause I went out and got a Sapphire 5870... My 5870 doesn't work in widescreen mode (in BIOS) and it bugs me so much! I tried the process on insanelymac to change the rom manually with the Hex editor... but it failed to work.

Also, I did not modify that XFX bios. It came from the factory supporting that widescreen resolution.

It would be nice, if Rominator or netkas could confirm / refute this.
