Just out of interest.. what is it that causes Pentium Ds (and older) to fail when loading the vanilla kernel?

Is it something that could be patched around in the bootloader code?

hmm... ive been doing a bit of reading, there's mention of SSSE3 instructions being used for 64-bit mode.  what happens if you try to run vanilla kernel with -legacy flag on such a processor?  anyone know?
