I got a privmsg from rp4k today on irc. He says that even if I've got efi_v8 and vanilla kernel, I will not be able to update to 10.5.2 without krasching my system. Does anyone know if this is true or not? And if it's true, does anyone know what's destroying the system?

I was unable to install any of 10.5.2 updates yet. Always around 52% screen freezes and nothing happens anymore. Tried to update a fresh installation with minimal modifications with same result.

it works.

i'd say there's a 99% chance whats happening is AppleIntelCPUManager is getting activated during the install (the update install it) and then crashes your machine.

some solutions are to do the following:

-install the 10.5.2 update from another partition (not on your live one) and then remove appleintelcpumanager after
-if installing on your current booted system, open terminal and sudo rm -rf AppleIntelCPU* in your extensions folder constantly during the update
-last solution and untested by me is to install it using pacifist and dont install AppleIntelCPUManager

i hear you also might have to boot into single user mode (-s) after its installed and kextload dsmos the first time (make sure you remount your / as rw first)

if this is too much or you dont understand any of it, then wait until 10.5.2 is out with real guides/scripts.

@SG : Thanks for your tips, installation from different boot drive worked so far.
But system is hanging on reboot right after the line loading "iTunesPhoneDriver".

i'm not going to pretend to understand how this works but do this:

get this kernel from my site http://mckill.ca/mach_kernel_rescue.zip.  after you unzip it, chmod/chown it properly and keep the same name (mach_kernel_rescue).

reboot and hit f8 in darwin bootloader and choose this kernel, let it boot and it will eventually reboot (if it doesnt reboot yourself after a few mins) into your normal 10.5.2 kernel and it should work.

dont forget to reinstall applesmbios, patched applehda and a patched ionetworking kexts if you had any of those.

Great, it worked !

I think, it is kind of a debugging enabled kernel: It showed a problem with AppelEFIRuntime.kext, after removing it system booted  and afterwards with the vanilla kernel without any problems.

Thanks alot for your help !!

Edit: Your blog already helped me in the past.
