Hi all,

Is there any info as to which GPUs support Metal 2? Is GTX 980 one of them?

Thanks for your time.

As with other Graphic APIs, some hardware will support it completely, some partially(hardware+software)  and some won't support it at all. Any hardware that supported metal 1 will probably at least partially support metal 2. Newer GPUS such as AMD RX cards, should fully support it.
My guess is that the GTX 980 will only have partial support.

Taken from some forums:

"Just finished some extended chat with the Nvidia support hotline

Apparently, the 10.12 Nvidia Pascal Web Driver disaster will find its continuation under 10.13 High Sierra  :wallbash:

The answer was quite clear. There is an ongoing dispute between Apple and Nvidia concerning contracts, rights and marketing policies... Currently he was not able to say if there will be 10.13 macOS High Sierra web driver support at all. But for sure it seems that there will not be any 10.13 Web Driver support in the near future!  :thumbsdown_anim:

Very deceiving news   :help:

Ironically, the 10.12.6 Web Driver workaround just supports OpenGL and Metal for Kepler graphics cards. Pascal and likely also Maxwell users have to live with proper screen resolution and basic video acceleration"

Any gpu that supports Metal Supports Metal 2 according to tech sheet.

most of the core benefits of Metal 2 are just more refinement/bug fixes and optimizes that they did based on developer feedback. Few new functions but mostly that stuff doesn't pertain to most of apps that already use metal. For example World of Warcraft will see very little gain from Metal 2 in terms of new features. Just whatever improvements there are in the driver/core backend of it all.

One of the big things with Metal 2 on iOS is that a lot of new iOS only features only work on the A11 bionic chip.

Refer to this table
The key to notice is on desktop metal is still on GPUFamily1 which is how you know all GPUs supported by 10.11, 10.12, are same on 10.13
when the GPU requirement goes up, the chart will reflect GPUFamily1 increase to 2.

iOS you actually see this more clearly. GPUFamily4 is the A11 bionic.
