Title: Mojave 10.14 on cMP
Post by: Rominator on June 06, 2018, 11:45:34 PM
Hey, so I haven't seen a lot of people (as in just me and 1 or 2 others) post info about 10.14 on cMP 4,1/5,1.

When I have tried it boots, but on my machine the Finder crashes over and over. System Preferences mostly crash too, some work. System Profiler works so you can get some nice screen shots and see Metal support on cards so that is good enough for me.

Nobody else has posted the Finder crashing thing so maybe it's just me?

Oddly enough, I tried on 2011 iMac that has unsupported 6970. Desktop is all glitchy and obviously there is no acceleration but Finder works and so do System Preferences.

So let's get some more info going.

And it's super easy to make it work if you have a supported machine to install on. Once the install is done, make sure SIP is "off" on your cMP. Reboot your supported machine into High Sierra and copy the Platform Support.plist from /System/Library/CoreServices from High Sierra to Mojave. No need to tinker with it, just replace it. Should work with anything that worked on High Sierra.

If High Sierra worked, now Mojave will.

I used a SATA drive with USB3 adapter, but you can be creative. Curious how it works for others.

Can confirm finder was constantly crashing running the 10.14 Beta on a 5,1, pretty unusable at the moment.

Try clicking on stuff in dock.

Once you get something running other than Finder running you can choose "About This Mac" and see what it has to say about GPU.

^^^^Mojave is not yet ready for a cMP 5,1.  That capability will bo coming later for machines that have been upgraded with a metal capable GPU.

Sorry Rominator,
I read the fist post, but I couldn't imagine that my Mac is
one of the unsupported Mac's..
Is is like a blind spot to recognise how old my MacPro is..

Hope for the 10.14 beta2 or beta3 and for a new and modern MacPro mid 2019

Regards Zodi

P.S. I'm a little bit disappointed about the strategies of the new Apple leadership

Title: Re: Mojave 10.14 on cMP DP2 has Finder working !
Post by: Rominator on June 20, 2018, 11:12:36 AM
Definitely moving toward cMP working well.

First DP had Finder crashing a few dozen times per minute.

Now it stays running.

Getting there.

BTW, super-duper easy way to run Mojave on 4,1/5,1 is to install on another machine (supported) and copy the platformsupport.plist from 10.10. or other earlier OSX. 10.10 would also include 3,1 and X-Serve.

just remove paltformsupport.plist completely

On 3,1 with APFS mod I got to Mojave desktop, looked great, but as I reached for mouse it rebooted.

But fact it got to desktop indicates it's doable to me.

Watch out if have Bootcamp partition on the same drive. It killed MBR on my Bootcamp partition so I wasn't able to boot anymore.

Solution is to place 16 GB SSD just for MBR inside second optical bay.

I've also moved Mojave from APFS back to HFS+ to be able to switch it from Windows (and read it).

cMP 5,1 here running PB1, had to pull vanilla AMD 5770 due to lack of Metal support, replaced with EFI-flashed 7950 (main gfx is a RX580)
Zero issues during upgrade or after. I've seen the netkas beta2 post ... I assume that relates to DP2, which should be identical to PB1, no issue getting into W10 via boot screen.

Guess I should consider myself lucky ...?

Unsupported CPU worked for me without SSE 4.2
Just replace
10.13.4 file to 10.14
com.apple.telemetry.plugin
/System/Library/UserEventPlugins/com.apple.telemetry.plugin

Will the kernel boot flag "-no_compat_check" no longer work for PlatformSupport bypass?
This made HS an easy to update machine since it no longer mattered what was in the PS.plist.

Code:
$ cat /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>-v mbasd=1 -no_compat_check</string>
</dict>
</plist>

Big EFI update from Apple today for the cMP in Mojave DP7.  Were up to ROM 0138.

5.0 GT/s has been enabled for MANY AMD Cards.  7850, rx470 rx480 rx580 etc.  No hardware mod required.  If there is a driver, it supports 5.0GT/s

EFI Firmware can now be updated without an EFI Card.  More microcodes.. No NVMe booting without a mod.

OK, I'm still on HS, 10.13.6 because I have an MVC flashed GTX 1080. However, I just updated the FW to V 138.0.0.0.0.

Even though I have an EFI card, the progress bar is no longer shown during the update process. However, since HS, I get rolling text before the appearance of the Apple. That text remained on screen longer than usual, and showed activity during the upgrade.

My GPU still shows 2.5 GT/s which I believe to be purely cosmetic. Both Cuda-Z and OceanWave tell me differently, as they always have.

AND, it's reassuring to know that if I had wanted, I could have installed Mojave. I guess the GTX 1080 is recognized as a Metal capable card by Mojave.

Mac Pro 4,1 flashed to 5,1 - Radeon 7950 flashed to Mac - Mojave Beta 1 works PERFECT without any modifications

There is now native NVMe boot support on the Mac Pros after updating to the 140.0.0.0.0 firmware from the dev beta 10.14.1 beta 3.

Windows 7 do not support NVMe unless you mod it to include all the drivers needed https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2990941/update-to-add-native-driver-support-in-nvm-express-in-windows-7-and-wi

Hi community
I have a MacPRO 5,1 with:
-  ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB
-  NVIDIA NVS 510 2047 Mo
the firmware version are MP51.0089.B00

at the upgrade to Mojave the Mac Pro still crashes at system loading before the login

I removed the ATI card and the computer starts without worry.
only since the NVS is not EFI.
I do not see the boot loading and I can't which another boot volumes

i have see this articles:
Install macOS 10.14 Mojave on Mac Pro (Mid 2010) and Mac Pro (Mid 2012) - Apple Support

i will know if the ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB is compatible with METAL

I have see some rumour about 10.14.1 will change a little bit my problem.
Can someone tell me if I need to change my graphics card or not

In a word - Yes!  Your card is NOT metal compatible!

yeah, gotta be 7xxx or later AMD

funny  thing is Apple keeps giving the nvidia folks the heave-ho, yet much older nvidia cards have metal support

I have both a Nvidia GTX 780 and a Radeon 7970.  Since the release of Mojave, the 7970 blows the GTX 780 away with the few games I have played.  Borderlands 2 is on average 5 to 10 frames faster.  Fortnite (a Metal rendered game from what I've read) works flawlessly on the 7970, while it stutters like crazy and is pretty much unplayable with the GTX 780.  I'm under the impression that even if Nvidia were to get their web driver working again, performance may still suffer greatly.   :(

yes, Apple has bent over backwards trying to keep their choice of AMD from looking as stupid as it was.

they have hamstrung Nvidia ever since
