Title: GTX 1080 recommendation
Post by: eVasilis on November 02, 2017, 02:46:26 PM
Hi all

I am thinking of putting this, https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=08G-P4-6284-KR, in a 2010 mac pro. Would you recommend it? Its max power draw is 215 Watts but it has 2x8 pin sockets. What about the cables required?

Thanks in advance

I have this card, flashed by Rominator (MVC).  No issues and the power draw is low with only one eight pin connector:

Over the years I have come to really like the Gigabyte 3 fan cooler.

Thanks, I got confused with this one as it does not need, according to its spec sheet, more than 215 W of power. That is why I felt that an external PU was unnecessary.

Hi all

Pretty sure all you need is just two mini 6pin -> 8pin cable.

As you said, it doesn't need 2x8pin at all. Most likely it's just there to make people believe that's a powerful card (marketing purpose). Since the Pascal card's rom is locked. I believe a general user is impossible to OC the card to draw more than 300W.

Anyway, dual 8pin card has it's advantage (even though it's not required). The power draw most likely will be more even, but not heavily rely on the 8pin (in a 6+8 config). Therefore, two independent mini 6pin -> 8pin should work.

If you want to play safe. You can always go

dual mini 6pin -> single 8pin -> dual 6+8pin

In this case, no matter what's the config of the card, and what's the power draw distribution. The two mini 6pin will always evenly demanded, and can practically deliver up to around 240W to the card before hitting the shutdown protection. (N.B. if including the slot power, that's more than 300W in total)

GTX1080 couldn't overdraw 2 @ 6pins to save it's life.

Like Dual Exhaust on a V-6. Looks nice, not needed.

So in this particular one it's a gimmick. Nice...
