Compatibility overview

On this page I initially asked whether there was some kind of a table or an overview of setups that were confirmed to work. Since I haven't heard yet of any table or page that summarizes the compatibility of graphic cards/roms/mac pros I assume there doesn't exist any. Therefore, I have started to build this table. Since some people were confused by the example data (sorry for that), I removed this misleading data and started to fill in real data so that people can rely on it.

If you want to contribute, please post:

• Type of your Mac Pro: 1,1 (2006) or 2,1 (2007) or 3,1 (2008) or 4,1 (early 2009) as in System Profiler)
• Exact name of graphic card, memory, product code (see list below or ATI 5870 models list or ATI 5770 cards list)
• ROM that you used
• What is working/not working (e.g. no image during boot process, only one DVI port working etc)

Generally, the Apple Radeon Cards seem to work in all Mac Pro models although Apple only supports them in the Mac Pro Models 3,1 and 4,1. Of course, none of the configurations below are in any way supported by Apple. If you are going to flash a card, you do this at your own risk! You find assistance in the "How to flash a card" guide and the "Evergreen MacPro ROMs". Make sure to have installed 10.6.4 on your Mac Pro with the graphics update. Generally, it can be said that EFI boot screen only works when the 5770er and 5870er cards are used with a DVI-VGA adapter. If you don't find your card in the table, please have a look at the other posts in this thread. Keeping the table up-to-date is relatively timeconsuming, which is the reason I stopped doing it. I have been following this forum for a few days now and I think I have read most topics regarding the 5770/5870 flashing stuff. However, what I'm missing a bit is some kind of an overview of what has been achieved already by netkas, rominator and the other great guys who have initiated all of this.

Is there some wiki page or some table that gives new users a quick overview of what already is possible with which configration (mac pro, graphic card, rom) and what has yet to be tested/hacked first?

If not, just to give you an example (with some example data) what I'm imagining:

lol...just jumped in and looked at the "overview", not noticing that it was all just example data.   Me being a Mac Pro 1,1 owner who has a Sapphire 5770, I saw that I only need find this Rom XY and I would be getting limited usage out of my card.   So I scoured the forum...damn no other mention of Rom XY.   Ok, maybe it's on another site...spent like 10 minutes googling to my hearts content.   Nothing....damnit.   Went back to the "overview" and read it all the way through.   Yeah...just example data...ok...I feel stupid now.

Mac & card:
I have a MacPro4,1 (early 2009, quad 2.93 GHz) and use a HIS Radeon HD 5870 with 1 GB memory (product code H587F1GDG). The card is in reference design, see this picture. Noise at idle is quite audible, way louder than the Apple 4870 I used to have - I ordered a new cooler to take care of it. Dunno about temps, Hardware Monitor doesn't support the card.

ROM:
I'm using the HIS5870.rom that Netkas made with the original ROM + EFI part from iMac, available at this post or list of evergreen Mac Pro ROMs.
No video at boot until login screen, after that everything works fine - using two 24" displays at 1920x1200 on the DVI ports.

could everybody write something about cooler and noiselevel of the card and temps? Under OSX and windows if possible?
I bought the 5770 with first design (looks like the apple card), and compared to the my flashed 4870 it is cooler but really noisy.... when shopping for the 5870 i try to avoid this mistake.

Interesting, some 5770s have boot screen working. I don't think a single flashed 5870 shows video before drivers load. I'd like to be proven wrong though.

Regarding fan speed-- it could be the consequence of flashing with a BIOS that's not designed for the card. But making a custom BIOS is easy. See my post in the 5870 ROM thread. Plus, the ROM using EBC should work in all Mac Pros (but it's designed for 5870s only). The method should work with EFI-modified ROMs too, with minor changes.
